SF Mayor Ecstatic over Gay Marriage Ruling

Today's show focused on last week's ruling by the California Supreme Court legalizing gay marriage.
And San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom couldn't have been more ecstatic nor clear about his position on last week's ruling by the California Supreme Court making gay marriage legal in the state.
"It was an exhilarating feeling, that's the best I can describe it," Newsom said after learning of the justices' ruling. And he was quick to announce to a cheering crowd,
"My God, this is now bigger than San Francisco."
"As California goes, so goes the rest of the nation. It's inevitable."
"This door is wide open now. It's going to happen whether you like it or not. This is the future, and it's now."
See video of Newsom's exhilaration here.
In the 4-3 vote, judges have made California the second state in the nation to allow gay marriage. Within 30 days gays and lesbians in California will be able to get a state recognized marriage license. (See video on Court's ruling here.)
The ruling could be seen as a political victory for Gavin Newsom after his action in February of 2004, which resulted in 4,000 same-sex couples exchanging vows at San Francisco's City Hall, but which was soon overruled.
I'm sure he will try to ride last week's victory all the way to the state house in his run for governor in 2010. But will it be a wining strategy for him?
California defined marriage in 2000 with Prop. 22 when voters overwhelmingly (61%) said marriage is between a man and a woman. It was the court, not the people, that overturned that last week.
Tony Perkins, President of the Family Research Councilcriticized the Court for its decision saying, "The California Supreme Court has taken a jackhammer to the democratic process, and the right of the people to affect change in public policy. Four judges discarded the votes of 4,618,673 Californians who approved the state's 'Defense of Marriage Act.' Voters understand that children should not be deprived of a mother or a father."
Because of the efforts of organizations like California's Campaign for Children and Families a marriage amendment to the state's constitution is slated to appear on the ballot in the November election. Over 1.1 million California voters signed petitions placing The California Marriage Protection Act on the ballot which will give voters the chance to correct the judicial activism of their state's highest court, and to once and for all protect the definition of marriage in their state.
Do the people of California have the will to win on this issue again? Yes, I think so. However, if I'm wrong, then I'll have to agree with Newsom on this one point only -- so will go the nation.
In the meantime, what will happen to pastors and rabbis who disagree with the court's ruling? CBN's Erick Stakelbeck reported, "There's been some concern that California pastors may face lawsuits if they refuse to marry gays. But Sarah Seitz of the Washington-based liberty counsel says that won't happen--Pastors will continue to be protected as they were prior to this decision--based on the free exercise clause--due to the nature of their job and because of their sincerely held religious beliefs. So they will not be forced to perform marriage ceremonies for same sex couples."
Once again, the debate on gay marriage will intensify in California, and in the presidential campaigns for the White House, as both sides on this issue battle it out as never before leading up to the November election.
Footnote: You think California's Supreme Court is taking their middle name too seriously? SUPREME?

The Day Families Earn Enough to Pay for Gov't

Senator Tom McClintock on the show today talking about the government 'takings' of our money and our rights -- not just taxes, but our safety deposit box contents, stocks and private property.
What affects the family, domestic policy-wise,more than taxes?
If we didn't have to pay close to 50% of our income on local, state and federal taxes, perhaps more young families could own their home, or not have to go through fore-closure! Perhaps more families could afford health insurance, or not have to worry so much about the soaring cost of gasoline at the pump.
What do you think? I think - ah, yes!
Every year a date is set that estimates the day when Americans (finally) stop working to pay federal, state and local taxes and start working for themselves. In 2008 "Tax Freedom Day" was April 29th.
But the American Institute for Economic Research (AIER) sets a cost of government spending date by calculating what they’ve dubbed, “Friedman Day” which recognizes the late Nobel Prize winning economist Milton Friedman’s notion that it’s not how much governments collect in taxes that matters most, it’s how much they spend. This year taxpayers will work until May 19th in order to pay for the federal government’s spending in 2007.
Despite a Republican Administration, and thanks to a Democrat controlled Congress, this year is 12 days later than it was in 2000. Soon Americans will work 6 months or a half a year just to pay for government spending. This is outrageous!

War on Terror Facts: Israel

Fact: Anti-Semitism is increasing in the world today and a new genocide of Jews is planned. David Horowitz has launched the “Stop the Genocide Campaign” at the Terrorism Awareness Network.
Why?
Because the similarities of Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad repeatedly calling for the end of Israel, to Hitler's persecuting the Jews in front of the world -- while the world does nothing -- is, to say the least, troubling.
Consider what Adolf Hitler said:
"The personification of the devil as the symbol of all evil assumes the living shape of the Jew" -Adolf Hitler
"The struggle for world domination will be fought entirely between us, between Germans and Jews. All else is facade and illusion. Behind England stands Israel, and behind France, and behind the United States. Even when we have driven the Jew out of Germany, he remains our world enemy.
He also said, " What luck for rulers that men do not think.”
Now Consider Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s words:
"Israel is a rotten, dried tree that will be annihilated in one storm."
"Israel must be wiped off the map …
"A new Middle East will prevail without the existence of Israel.
"We ask the West to remove what they created sixty years ago (the state of Israel) and if they do not listen to our recommendations, then the Palestinian nation and other nations will eventually do this for them."
"Anybody who recognizes Israel will burn in the fire of the Islamic nation's fury."
“The United States, Britain and Israel will eventually disappear from the world like the pharaohs. It is a divine promise.”
"[There is] no significant need for the United States."
Fact: Iran is funding Hezbollah and other terrorist organizations to wipe out Israel
Consider Hezbollah’s leader Hassan Nasrallah:
If we searched the entire world for a person more cowardly, despicable, weak and feeble in psyche, mind, ideology and religion, we would not find anyone like the Jew. (New Yorker, Oct. 14, 2002)
If they (Jews) all gather in Israel, it will save us the trouble of going after them worldwide.
Therefore, we are not interested in our own personal security. On the contrary, each of us lives his days and nights hoping more than anything to be killed for the sake of Allah. (MEMRI: Al-Manar TV , Feb. 18-19, 2005)
Is another holocaust planned? Yes.
Is it just about Israel? No.
Should we take these statements seriously? What do you think?

Today: 2008 National Day of Prayer - Some are against it

On the show on Monday we talked about those who are fighting against the annual National Day of Prayer.
Bill Baker of the National Day of Reason says:
"Why is this 'National/Global day of Prayer' so bad and worth parodying in the name of 'reason'? Well, for starters they are'nt even attempting to make it an interfaith event or anything, It is purely the Evangelical, Fundamentalist, mainstream Christian Church seeking once again to subvert democracy and interfere w/secular politics to keep the secular govt, state, and world under their thumb and hooked to their strings, and that of their Bible and their god {or their versions/interpretations of them rather}.
The National Day of Reason is a deliberate counter to the National Day of Prayer scheduled on the same day as the National Day of Prayer -- Thursday, 1 May 2008.
Why are they doing this? Here's what they say on their website:
"Now, more than ever, America needs a Day of Reason.
"With the religious right firmly in control of the Presidency and Congress, and with the threat to our Judiciary looming large, there has never been as important a moment in which to affirm our commitment to the Constitutional separation of religion and government, and to celebrate Reason as the guiding principle of our secular democracy.
"During the past year we have witnessed the intrusion of religious ideology into all spheres of or government, with such assaults on the wall separating church and state as:
-The biblically-inspired Federal Marriage Amendment, which would codify intolerance and bigotry by withholding civil liberties from one class of people;
-Faith-based initiatives in federal agencies that give preferential treatment to religious organizations which proselytize and employ discriminatory hiring practices;
-Restrictions on important scientific research on the basis of religious objections;
-Attempts to introduce biblical creationism and its alter-ego "Intelligent Design" into our public school science curricula;
-The appointment of judges who willingly place their religious beliefs above our laws;
-Battles over the display of the Ten Commandments and other overtly religious icons in schools and on courthouses;
-Religiously motivated restrictions on access to reproductive services and information;
-Efforts to permit greater political involvement by houses of worship;
-Attempts to re-introduce school prayer.
Okay, what's wrong with the above?
First of all, the 'religious right' is not in control of Congress. Hello? the liberals are with Nancy Pelosi, et al.
Second, there is no Constitutional separation of religion and government.
And where does it say that 'Reason' is the guiding principle?
And that our democracy is secular?
Their arguments are not about about a day of prayer. They are political positions on the issues...that read like the liberals' talking points.
Another site promoting and 'inclusive' prayer day (MoonsFavors) says:
"The National Day of Prayer has been hijacked!
"Our Inclusive National Prayer Day project aims to work with activists in as many states as possible to lobby governors to refrain from proclaiming or endorsing the National Day of Prayer in ways that enhance the Task Force's exclusive control of the day and its efforts to create the appearance of government-sponsored religious ceremonies.
Don Feder writing about this in the past said, "The secularist jihad will do anything to purge public expressions of faith. Where it can’t ban prayer completely, it demands nondenominational, "inclusive" prayer--prayer as bland as tapioca pudding."
What is a non-sectarian prayer, anway? Don’t say Jesus' name, don’t say Messiah? What would a Buddhist have to leave out? A Muslim couldn’t say Allah? Basically, a prayer that is said to -- a generic God -- who is that?
Freedom of religion in America is just that -- you are free to practice the faith of your choice, and we allow its (and all) public expression.
Freedom of religion does not mean censoring expression.
