HOT OFF THE SHOW! Stats on Teen Internet Use
Under the weather today so not in for LIVE! Tuesday, but aired interview with Youth Mentor, Wynelle Burns on teen internet use.
Friends, if we want our kids safe from online predators this statistics have to change:
Cox Communications Teen Internet Safety Study:
-61% of 13-17 yr olds have personal profile on site such as MySpace, Xanga; half with pictures of self.
-71% reported receiving messages online from someone they don't know
-45% have been asked for personal information from someone they don't know
-30% have considered meeting someone that they've only talked to online
-14% have actually met a person in person they only talked to over the internet (of these 9% were 13-15 yrs and 22% were 16-17 yrs)
-40% said they' usually reply to messages from someone they don't know
-only 18% said they'd tell an adult
-37% said they are "not very concerned" or "not at all concerned" about someone using information they've posted online in ways they don't want
-22% reported that their parents or guardians have never discussed internet safety with them
It has been reported that teens spend between 35-50 hrs a week on the internet. That's a full work week!
Predators have turned to the internet since registration of pedophiles is in force. Kids need to be educated and monitored to make sure they are not falling prey to strangers who disguise themselves as teens and potential friends.
Lots more on the show which you can listen to online at the link below.
