Pres. Candidates Quotes on the War

How important is a presidential candidate's position on the war in Iraq and the war on terror to you? Please don't vote until you are clear on where they stand on this issue.

Their words speak for themselves.

OBAMA

"It's conceivable that there are those in the Arab world who say to themselves, 'This is a guy who spent some time in the Muslim world, has a middle name of Hussein and appears more worldly and has called for talks with people, and so he's not going to be engaging in the same sort of cowboy diplomacy as George Bush...that's a perfectly legitimate perception..."
- Barack Obama

Why are you always reminding us that you opposed the war? Isn't that yesterday's news? Is that experience really relevant?" And what I always say is this -- this isn't just about the past, it's about the future.
- Barack Obama

I didn't see the weapons of mass destruction at the time, I didn't think there was an imminent threat from Saddam Hussein.
- Barack Obama

We're not going to baby sit a civil war.
- Barack Obama

"You know, the truth is that right after 9/11, I had a pin," Obama said. "Shortly after 9/11, particularly because as we're talking about the Iraq War, that became a substitute for I think true patriotism, which is speaking out on issues that are of importance to our national security, I decided I won't wear that pin on my chest.
- Barack Obama

MCCAIN

"And, if we lost, then who win? Did Al Qaida win? When on the floor of the House of Representatives they cheer - they cheer - when they pass a withdrawal motion that is a certain date for surrender, what were they cheering? Surrender? Defeat?"
- John McCain

"War is wretched beyond description, and only a fool or a fraud could sentimentalize its cruel reality."
- John McCain

"Do not yield. Do not flinch. Stand up. Stand up with our President and fight. We're Americans. We're Americans, and we'll never surrender. They will."
- John McCain

"Our armed forces will fight for peace in Iraq, a peace built on more secure foundations than are found today in the Middle East. Even more important, they will fight for two human conditions of even greater value than peace: liberty and justice."
- John McCain

"We must win in Iraq. If we withdraw, there will be chaos; there will be genocide; and they will follow us home."
- John McCain
