Harvard, San Francisco & Memorial Day
As you pause to remember those who have paid the ultimate price this Memorial Day weekend...think also about how our military is increasingly unwelcome on school campuses, including the ROTC.
YAF -- Flagg K. Youngblood, Army veteran and Yale alumnus, advocates for students’ rights as Director of Military Outreach: “Let no wanton foot tread rudely on such hallowed grounds.” While many a commentator could have penned these words after the San Francisco Board of Education voted to expel the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) from its schools in November 2006, they actually date back more than 140 years.To John A. Logan, the Civil War general and congressman from Illinois. The man credited with helping establish what we now call Memorial Day. Now, his admonition has once again been heeded, this time in the city by the bay.
