Ponder: To give thorough consideration, to think carefully, reflect deeply, cerebrate
Black History Month has been observed since 1926 because of the efforts of a Harvard Scholar, Dr. Carter G. Woodson, who worked to bring Black history into the awareness of the American public. He chose February as the date in order to coincide with the birthdays of Black leader, Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln, both men who greatly effected Black America.
We also observe President's Day in February and while Abraham Lincoln may be remembered for many things, including his stature, his persistence in running for office, failing over and over again until he became President of the United States! But perhaps most of all, his character, as it related to freeing the slaves.
They say you can tell alot about the woman of the house by the books on her shelf, and alot about the character of a man by his words. Here are some of Lincoln's words which give us a glimpse into the heart of the man who set the slaves free:
~ I will study and get ready, and perhaps my chance will come.
~ Whatever you are, be a good one.
~ My great concern is not whether you have failed, but whether you are content with your failure.
~ The way for a young man to rise is to improve himself in every way he can, never suspecting that anybody wishes to hinder him.
~ I am a slow walker, but I never walk backwards.
~ I want it said of me by those who knew me best, that I always plucked a thistle and planted a flower where I thought a flower would grow.
Think about it.
